4 Tips For Making Your Move Easier!

Wednesday, April 20, 2011

You’ve made the decision to relocate to an independent living community and you’re ready to enjoy your new freedom and meet some new people; the only thing standing in your way now is getting there. Packing, sorting through items and moving can get overwhelming, especially since most of us have accumulated many belongings over the years. You may be thinking: Where do I start? Well, we’re here to help you and provide you with some tips to make the moving process a little less stressful!

Go through your home. Before you do anything, take a good look at all the rooms/items in your house. Take into consideration the size of your new place and decide upfront which items are non-negotiable – things like keepsakes, furniture, photographs, etc. In all likelihood, you’ll be downsizing and it’s a good time to get rid of those expendable items.

Make a plan. Map out a schedule to tackle each room in your house and complete all tasks in that room (even if it takes more than one day) before moving on to the next one. This way you allow yourself time to really sort through your items and make a list of what will be moving with you.

Ask for help. Whatever you do, don’t attempt to do everything yourself! Ask your friends, family members, or even hire professionals to help you through the process. They can help you sort through your items and make sure everything gets packed up. They can also help you ensure that everything you are moving will indeed fit within your new space. Moving is both physically and mentally exhausting and having the support of others will surely help ease some of the stress.

Take care of yourself. Don’t overdo it and try to do everything at once. Allow yourself time to emotionally grasp ‘that you are leaving’, but know that you’re moving on to create new memories in your new home! Moving can be a stressful time and it’s important to get rest, eat well and reach out to other if you need support.
