Skin Care in Your 70s and Beyond

Wednesday, November 08, 2017

Taking care of your skin is important at every age. Our skin experiences many changes as time goes on, which leads to the need for new skin care habits.

Avoid Too Much Sun Exposure

Sunlight can feel great on your skin, but it can also speed up signs of aging and increase your risk of developing skin cancer. This is why it’s important to avoid spending too much time in the sun at any age, but especially during your senior years. If you’ll be going outside during the day, apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes before you leave. Protect your skin by wearing hats, sunglasses, and other accessories that will lessen how much skin is exposed to the sun.

Use Gentle Cleansers

The face washes that you used when you were younger might be too harsh now that you’ve gotten older. It is best to stick to gentle cleansers that will remove dirt and toxins from your skin without stripping it of its natural oils or irritating it. Look for cleansing products that are designed for sensitive skin and choose ones that are creamy and moisturizing. Avoid exfoliating products that can harm your facial skin. You should also wash your face with cool water and avoid using hot water during showers or baths.

Moisturize Your Skin

After you wash your face, it’s important to replenish any hydration that was lost by applying a moisturizer. Dry skin is a common problem for seniors, and it can become worse without proper skin care habits. Look for moisturizers, serums, and antioxidant creams that can keep your skin hydrated to help it look more youthful. You can also hydrate your skin by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
