Summer Activity Ideas for Seniors

Wednesday, June 07, 2017
Senior communities offer their residents a variety of features that can enrich their lives in many different ways. With summer coming up, now is a great time to learn about the features that your community offers and discover ways to enjoy your time during the hotter months of the year. Check out some of these fun and engaging summer activity ideas for seniors:

Play Games with Friends

If you’re looking for a good way to stay cool this summer, consider planning a weekly game day or night with your friends. Each week, you can meet at one of your senior apartments or in one of the many activity rooms and play your favorite games. You can play card games, board games, or look up totally new games to make sure you have a fun-filled summer.

Card games are easy to play and do not require much physical activity. They are also a good way to keep the mind active and alert. Games such as pinochle, canasta, and rummy are popular among seniors. Bridge is a very popular card game that can be learned here.

Mahjong has been a popular game for more than 100 years, and has recently become popular among seniors. This challenging game using tiles stimulates the mind and is fun for those of all skill levels. You can even play online thanks to AARP, although the social interaction of playing with a friend is preferred.

Go Fishing

Fishing is a classic summer activity that many seniors find relaxing and enjoyable. You can look into fishing excursions or visit your senior community’s fishing pond to partake in this beloved and peaceful activity. Fishing with friends is a great way to pass the time over the summer months.

Get Creative with Arts and Crafts

You can let your creative side shine this summer by checking out your senior community’s arts and crafts studio. Designing and creating something of your own is a great way to express yourself or even make unique gifts for your loved ones. Even if you have never felt creative in the past, it’s a good idea to consider trying arts and crafts as a soothing new hobby that will help you get in touch with your creative side.
