10 Healthy Habits for Seniors

Tuesday, November 19, 2024

Prioritizing your physical, mental, and social health is important at any age, but this is especially true as you get older. Building positive habits is the key to staying active and feeling great in your golden years. These habits can be simple and enjoyable and make a big difference in your day-to-day life. Explore 10 healthy habits seniors should adopt today for a better, more fulfilling lifestyle.

  1. Keep Moving

Physical activity is one of the biggest factors in staying healthy as a senior. You don’t need to run marathons or lift heavy weights—there are plenty of low-impact exercises to help you stay fit and active.

The trick is to find fun ways to exercise so it doesn’t feel like a chore. Try increasing your heart rate by walking, swimming, or dancing to your favorite tunes. Strength training also helps build muscle, which naturally depletes as you age. And yoga is excellent for improving flexibility and balance. No matter how you exercise, moving your body releases those feel-good endorphins for a nice mood boost.

  1. Eat Well

Your body changes as you get older, and so do your nutritional needs. Eating a balanced diet delivers the vitamins and minerals required to stay healthy and strong. Focus on whole foods, like fresh fruits and veggies, lean proteins, and whole grains. And don’t forget to include fiber-rich foods to keep your digestive system running smoothly.

  1. Hydrate

Water is another essential part of your diet. It’s common for seniors not to feel as thirsty, but drinking plenty of water throughout the day is crucial. Staying hydrated helps with energy levels, keeps the skin looking great, and even fosters healthy cognitive function.

  1. Get Enough Sleep

Sleep is often more elusive as you age, but it’s just as important as ever. A regular sleep schedule regulates your body’s internal clock. Try going to bed and waking up at the same time every day. Also, make your sleep environment comfortable by keeping the room dark, cool, and quiet. Avoiding caffeine and heavy meals before bed can help, too. And while an afternoon nap might seem tempting, skip it if you want to sleep better at night.

  1. Prioritize Mental Health

Your mental well-being is just as important as your physical health. Prioritizing this aspect of your health helps you enjoy life more and keeps you feeling connected to those around you. Try breathing exercises, meditation, or journaling to keep your mind calm and balanced. If you ever feel overwhelmed or sad for extended periods, don’t hesitate to reach out to a mental health professional.

  1. Stay Socially Active

Social interaction is a powerful part of mental health. Loneliness leads to depression and other problems, so maintaining relationships with your family, friends, and neighbors is important. Join a book club, attend community events, or simply meet up with friends for a chat to keep your mind engaged, reduce stress, and give you something fun to anticipate.

  1. Keep Your Brain Sharp

Just like your body, your brain needs regular exercise, too. Staying mentally engaged reduces the risk of cognitive decline and keeps life interesting. Challenge your mind by learning new skills, trying a new hobby, or playing puzzle games like crosswords or Sudoku. Reading, writing, and playing board games are also great ways to keep your mind active.

  1. Schedule Regular Health Checkups and Screenings

They say prevention is the best medicine, and they’re not wrong. Preventative health screenings like blood pressure checks, cholesterol tests, and cancer screenings help catch small issues early so treatments can begin in earnest. Staying on top of these appointments ensures that conditions don’t go unnoticed for long.

Be sure to schedule annual vision and hearing tests, too. Your senses may diminish with age, but there’s no need to settle for blurry vision or difficulty hearing. Regular eye exams keep your vision sharp and detect issues like cataracts, macular degeneration, and glaucoma. As for your hearing health, regular tests can identify hearing loss. Don’t put off getting fitted for hearing aids or other assistive devices that can help you stay engaged in conversations and greatly improve your quality of life.

  1. Manage Your Medications

As you age, managing your medications can get complicated. It’s important to take your prescriptions as recommended by your doctor. Keep a list of everything you’re taking, and use a pill organizer or set reminders to help you stay on track. Also, review your medications regularly with your doctor to make sure they’re still necessary and that no harmful interactions are occurring between drugs. This helps prevent unpleasant side effects and ensures you’re getting the best results from your treatment.

  1. Have Fun!

Above all, remember to have fun and enjoy life! Find activities that bring you joy, from painting or gardening to spending time with loved ones. Having fun is good for the soul and helps you stay young at heart. Laughter is also a fantastic medicine, so surround yourself with things that make you smile!

Here it is just a little over two weeks since we moved Bruce into Parkwood. I just wanted to tell you how pleased we are with Bruce’s transition and acclimation to Parkwood Heights. The entire staff and residents have been so very welcoming, helpful, and supportive.I see a remarkable difference in Bruce’s energy, health, and his avenues of interest….. We owe this to the eager and affirmative attention everyone at Parkwood has given Bruce over these past two weeks…Oh my gosh, I can’t tell you how relieved, rested, and encouraged I feel since Bruce has joined the Parkwood community…

Ken and I just want to let you know how much we appreciated having our Uncle in the Enriched Program at Parkwood Heights. His apartment was bright and inviting and the care he received by all the staff was wonderful. He could be independent, as well as cared for in relation to his needs. No matter what the day brought, the staff would tell us they loved their jobs and would always have a smile and a hug for everyone, helping to make each day a better day for those around them.

I moved to Parkwood Heights in 2005 because I wanted to live closer to my daughter. The activities department was the deciding factor. I enjoy having so many activities and events to choose from. Also, when calculating my expenses to live in my home or to live at Parkwood, the decision was made easier because the cost was about the same.

On January 19th we moved mom from Florida to New York. We were pleased with Parkwood Heights, from staff to the lovely facility. It was a difficult move for mom at the age of 97 as well as us with the arrangements. From day one, all of our questions were answered and we were guided through the move as easily as possible.

We had been looking around for about 2 years ... we knew that we wanted a spacious villa ... we came to Parkwood because we wanted to do things and they had just what we were looking for. There are so many activities to choose from, places to go and people to visit with. We love it here.
